Across Australia and the rest of the world, many of us have started working remotely. If you’re accustomed to working in an office environment or constantly being around your workmates—working from home is probably going to start off as a strange experience for you. Luckily, there are a few habits you can start getting yourself into which can help you adjust and keep your productivity levels high.
Read below as we reveal our top tips for working from home.
Just because you’re no longer working at the office doesn’t mean your daily routine should be forgotten about. In order to stay productive, it’s a good idea to keep to your usual workday schedule as closely as you can. Wake up at your usual time, shower, have your morning coffee, catch up with your colleagues and have your lunch at your usual time. These are a few of the little tasks you can continue doing each day that will help put you in a workday mindset and assist with productivity. And yes, this means getting out of your pyjamas each morning.
Being stuck at home with little social interaction can drive anyone crazy—this is why it’s important to stay connected with your colleagues throughout the day. This will be helpful for your sanity as well as ensuring you and your team are on the same page as each other so tasks are being completed accordingly. Video conferencing and instant messaging are great ways to stay in touch and create some sense of normality.
If you haven’t done so already, you should try to create a space in your home that is your designated work area. It’s a wise idea to try to create your workspace in an area of your home that isn’t already associated with leisure—so don’t set yourself up on the couch for the day! By working in a designated workspace, you can create the illusion for yourself that you’re at the office so you stay focused. It can also help you unwind after work as you will leave your workspace for the day and enter your leisure space to relax in the evening.
To make sure you stay on track throughout the day, it’s a good idea to write yourself a list each morning of the tasks you need to complete. Keep the list in your sight all day—this will act as a reminder of where you should be at and you can feel a sense of accomplishment as you tick off each task once completed.
Always ensure you make the time to get outside for some exercise. Whether it’s before work, after work or during your lunch break, you should try to get out of the house each day to exercise or to just go for a walk. This will help keep you relaxed, focused and can potentially improve your productivity levels when you return to your desk as exercising can often help put you in a happier mood.
